The Power of Positive Affirmations
Do Affirmations Work?
We got an email from Johnny, a #ThisIsMyEra 90-Day planner user asking if affirmations really work and how he could incorporate them in his life.
So our co-founder, Kuda Biza, decided to answer Johnny's question in the video below:
So first things first, What are affirmation statements?
Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When done daily, accompanied with the right actions, you can start to make positive changes in your life.
How do positive affirmation statements help you?
Research has shown that there are many benefits of positive affirmation statements. Here are some of the benefits:
- Helps you to stay motivated.
- Increases your confidence
- Boosts self- esteem
- Improves productivity
Studies show that using positive affirmation helps reduce stress
Johnny’s question comes from the desire to understand whether this notion of self-affirmation is really fact or fiction.
To answer Johnny’s question, there is actually tons of research out there that validates that positive affirmation statements really work. Empirical studies done by psychologists over decades have been able to prove that people that practice self-affirmation statements on a daily basis actually have more confidence and are able to overcome barriers that, without having this practice, they probably wouldn’t have.
One particular study showed that positive, self-affirmation statements actually help reduce stress. You read that right! They help to reduce stress! Just imagine that by saying these positive statements to yourself every single day, you can actually lower your stress. Who wouldn’t want to do that?
Do positive affirmation statements really work?
All of these statements are empowering - that is why they are self-affirmation statements.
However, just saying the positive affirmation statement on its own doesn’t mean that by just repeating the statement, you will inevitably achieve your goal. It is key to tie in action with reciting the positive self-affirmation statement in order to see the desired result.
Positive affirmations statements work in combination with action.
Self-affirmation statements work in combination with you setting goals, taking action and making sure you are continuously tracking your progress towards your goal and getting the help you need to get there.
If you only write your affirmation statements every day and then go spend all day sleeping on the beach, you will not achieve your goals! It is always important to couple up the routine of writing your daily affirmation statements with the action that you need to actually achieve that desired goal that you’re stating in the affirmation statement.
Here are two simple ways to incorporate affirmations into your life.
1. Use the ThisIsMyEra 90-Day Planner
If you use the ThisIsMyEra 90-day planner, we’ve made it simple for you to incorporate positive affirmations as part of your lifestyle. In the daily review section mentioned earlier, there is space for you to write your positive affirmation in the affirmation section. I personally like to write mine early in the morning when I’m planning my day. I find that writing mine early in the morning helps to set the tone for my day because I get to start the day with a positive mindset. Also, if you’re having a bad day, you can go back to your morning affirmation to remind yourself of that positive affirmation statement by opening your planner and reading your affirmation.
2. Make self-affirmation statements a daily practice
When it comes to positive affirmation statements, repetition is the key. The power is in the routine and making it a consistent action that you do every single day. This way you will be able to reap the benefits of the routine and be able to reprogram your subconscious with a more positive narrative, especially if you find yourself in negative self-talk a lot.
