Financial wellness is something everyone struggles with. Author, entrepreneur, and certified professional coach, Ashley Feinstein Gerstley, makes it her mission to empower others financially. She has a degree in finance and worked as an investment banker and started The Fiscal Femme as a blog dedicated to women, believing financial wellness is an important step in achieving gender equality. She focuses on not only the logistics, but the emotional and behavioral sides of money.
Her business has rapidly grown, and she’s since helped thousands of women and has been featured by Forbes, NBC, New York Times, and Glamour. For those looking to take the first steps in financial wellness, this podcast identifies the mindset and programs that can help you make this your era financially
Identify your "they"
Ashley admits that her transition from an investment banker to a coach wasn’t easy. She took a paycut and took on a title with less credibility and “glamour.” However, she was motivated by helping others, especially women, achieve their financial goals.
After some self reflection, she re-evaluated what “they” think. In other words, she thought about which opinions matter in the scope of her overall happiness. After all, only you can define your erafor yourself. Surround yourself with people who genuinely want to see you succeed.
Know that everyone has room to grow
There is a huge misconception that people with lower incomes are less “financially-well.” Ashley has worked with thousands at varying incomes who struggle, noting that even millionaires have issues cutting expenses. Why is this? Because lifestyle is relative and wealth doesn’t necessarily mean you’re financially savvy.
Alexander and Ashley contextualize this by a coffee order, where someone makingless and purchasing a simple coffee a day is similar to a wealthier person purchasing a grande-mocha-frap a day.
Change your financial mindset
Changing your mindset means changing the words you use and how you think about money. Ashley Advises not to think of the word “frugal” negatively. She describes re-evaluating finances as a “radical action of self-love” that can make budgeting seem more positive and a way to maximize the amount of joy she experiences per dollar (she explores this in-depth starting at minute 15). The Process of becoming financially-well should be exciting and empowering!
