“Apathy is the equivalent to negatively impacting the world in the case of sustainability and ecology.”
In his earlier college years, Devassi discovered that many people seemed to lack concern or interest in environmental sustainability, which is a huge issue that he believes we can do more to address.
In this episode, Alexander Star chats with Devassi Joseph, a second-year computer science student at TKM College of Engineering in India. Observing the apathetic stances of those in his community, he, along with 15 other Millenium Fellows, created Kaapikuru, a social enterprise currently made up of a public library, a cafeteria, and a gym that sustain themselves on renewable energy.
The organization first started with a small coffee shop, which was operating only 2-3 hours each day. However, in those short few hours, the shop got many people’s attention, bringing them together to share an idea or a dream. It became a community that provides a communication platform so that local people can improve their lives through education and engagement. From there, the organization rapidly grew into the force it is today.
In recounting his journey, Devassi offers insights on how he was able to create change and make a difference in his community. He emphasizes the importance of a having support group, a team, to strengthen the movement. Finally, he advises on how to manage your time and resources in the best way possible based on his own experiences.
